What does Kairos mean?
A Greek word for time. Compared to chronos which is the passage of time, kairos is the opportune or decisive moment in time, such as knowing when to release the arrow from the bow to hit the bullseye or knowing when to snap the shutter to capture the perfect picture. We are using this reference to a moment in time like the a-ha! moment when the person becomes inspired by something profound that they have witnessed, experienced, or in the case of the ArtsKairos Festival, seen.
Significance of the spirals
Why the tri-spiral? The design is interpreted from a 5200-year-old stone carving at Newgrange in Ireland. It was selected because this tri-spiral represents a profound experience where the flow of time past/present/future are meeting together in a moment of personal transformation inside this mystic chamber. The symbol still acts on people profoundly today, being loaded with ancient wisdom in a simple, timeless format. At the intersection of past, present, and future is the moment when we experience transformation of heart and mind. Carrying these outward with intention, we expand not only our core self, but positive effects begin to ripple through all those around us in the wake of this moment of transformation.
Awe to Action
Experiencing something profound has an almost reflex reaction triggering positive actions. This effect has been studied extensively. Even if only opening minds, enough of open minds will manifest something more tangible.
Examples: Witnessing someone’s remarkable generosity, Jane decides she could volunteer for a cause. Observing an astonishing achievement, Jack overcomes his hesitation and starts something new. Reconnecting with a sense of wonder, Pat spreads this joy to others. Hearing a deeply moving story, Jordan’s new perspective leads to mending fences with their family. Watching a good Samaritan rescue someone from a burning car, Josh decides to become a firefighter.
The Guild created the ArtsKairos Festival as a specific source (artwork) of awe, wonder, and profound feelings. Visitors to the event don’t have to love everything shown, but if any portion of the exhibition fills them with awe, they will reflexively become better humans though some following positive action. The world needs this, and it’s our belief that millions of people have an unspoken wish to contribute to human improvement, but often no mechanism to begin. Viewing profound artistic expression is one of the easiest ways to access personal inspiration. The desired a-ha! moment happens much quicker than with a mindfulness practice like contemplation or a physically grounding practice like tai chi.
The Guild is documenting examples of AweToAction through several channels and sharing examples to bring visibility to the positive outcomes. (ArtsKairos Festival, Kairos Challenge, Axis Mundi Map, Kairos Echoes, Art Adoptions, and probably more…)
Origin Story:
The Genesis of Kairos:
A Personal Calling to Deeper Perception
For years, I've observed a quiet yearning in the world around us. In our fast-paced lives, amidst the constant clamor for attention, I sensed a hunger—perhaps even a forgotten craving—for something truly profound, something that transcends the superficial and resonates with the core of our being. We often seek art to admire, to consume, but how often do we encounter art that truly transforms us, that reaches into the silence and awakens something dormant within?
This observation wasn't just an intellectual curiosity; it was a personal ache. I longed for spaces and moments where I could truly step beyond the ordinary, where perception wasn't just passive reception but an active, electrifying engagement. I believe many of us share this yearning, even if we've forgotten how to name it, or where to find it.
Realization
This realization was crystallized for me recently. After visiting a dozen art fairs, I often found myself walking away disappointed. So many art festivals were geared towards a retail audience, instead of being a venue for artistic expression. Artists were motivated mostly by the system they found themselves in. This standard system did not recognize my yearning for inspiration. But then, a vital moment: The Festival of the Arts in Marshfield, though somewhat remotely placed, was a clear demonstration that thousands of other people profoundly desire something more than what the standard system typically delivers, as did I, something engaging with recognizable elements of discovery and wonder. The response in attendance volume and length of stay was confirmation of a preference for a different approach.
It was shortly after, combined with a small gallery show featuring students of a local art teacher the week prior, that the true revelation struck. Witnessing the raw, extraordinary talent of children—especially a ten-year-old boy named Dominic, whose version of Van Gogh's The Starry Night captured a profound understanding of light and motion I’ve only ever seen in the master himself—I realized that the spark of genius exists everywhere. Many of these student works weren't just mere copies; they were expressions of pure, untamed perception, clearly guided by a teacher doing something truly special. This convergence—the public's deep, broadly unmet craving and the astonishing, often unseen, individual brilliance—ignited an undeniable conviction within me.
At the same time, I've always been captivated by the brilliance of artists whose work operates on a different plane—the true visionaries, the quiet innovators, the ones who create profound meaning without necessarily seeking the spotlight. Like a Laurie Anderson, they succeed in doing truly meaningful work, even when not overtly in the public eye. They don't need external validation; their genius is self-evident.
Vision
This is where the vision for Kairos was born. It became clear that there was a vital connection missing: a bridge between the deep, transformative work of these extraordinary artists and the subtle, forgotten hunger for profundity within many individuals.
Kairos is not for everyone, and that is by design. We are not aiming for accidental inspiration, nor are we trying to validate artists whose work already stands on its own. Instead, Kairos exists as a meticulously crafted journey for those who crave, or who have forgotten they once craved, something profoundly artistic. We believe that true engagement with art should be an active endeavor, a personal unfolding.
Purpose
Our purpose is to leverage the unparalleled greatness of these artists, not merely for admiration, but to elevate the visitor one step up towards the genius they themselves possess. We achieve this by meticulously curating experiences that draw you in, challenge your perception, and invite you to activate your own inner resonance, to take action. Kairos is the conduit, the 'superliminal' moment, where your perception ignites that spark within, transforming not just what you see, but how you experience the world, and indeed, yourself. This isn't about mere improvement; it's about channeling a palpable energy I haven't felt in years.
Our Team:
Paul Garcia, founder and sculptor
Paul brings expertise in market research, sales enablement, and tradeshow management. Kairos Guild is the fifth company he has founded and led, bringing versatility and perspective. He heavily utilizes the creative problem-solving process and balances divergent and convergent thinking to generate and implement new solutions. He is always planning, and more importantly leading by example. Most important to Paul is lifting others up, including finding ways for them to enjoy their work, and enabling others’ personal success. After a short series of notable events, Kairos howled to spring forth like Athena’s birth, fully formed, armed, and ready for action.

Our Model:
The Kairos Guild is focused on curated experiences, starting with how and what we communicate. We empower you to actively participate in translating profound inspiration into tangible action, enabling you to amplify collective efforts. This journey culminates in the ways we execute events that shift the consciousness of participants.
We are organized as a Massachusetts local nonprofit organization, not a public charity. We operate under the same principles as a charitable organization in fiscal responsibility and in service. Our supporters, volunteers, and members are aligned with our mission, regardless of otherwise charitable tax benefits.
Collective Effect:
We aim to foster a global network of individuals activating their potential, creating ripples of positive change in their communities and beyond. The Kairos Effect is designed to manifest through transformative experiences like our recurring festival, and through continuous, accessible engagement such as the Kairos Kabinet program. We invite you to become any part of this unfolding story.
